Human vs. AI Content: What Actually Wins in Search

In this article, we will explore:

  • Why AI content is losing rankings

  • What the Google algorithm is really looking for

  • Human vs. AI content performance

  • How to win in search today

There has been a subtle but significant paradigm shift in content performance. We have all seen the saturation of AI-generated content and the assumption by many businesses that it is good enough

However, if you are truly looking to increase visibility and grow your customer base, fluffy, keyword-loaded GenAI content is just not going to cut it anymore.

The truth is that organic traffic has been declining for many sites, despite the explosion of AI tools. Mass posting generic robot blogs (and social media content) is doing more harm than good.

While AI promises efficiency, emerging data suggests there may be serious consequences for rankings, trust, brand differentiation, and conversion quality when using it as your primary source for content generation.

The content conundrum

A recent Semrush study – where 20,000 keywords from over 42,000 blogs were analyzed – shows that content classified as AI-generated appeared in the top spot just 9% of the time, while content classified as human-written was there 80% of the time.

In another 2025 report, researchers found 86% of articles ranking in Google Search are written by humans, and only 14% are generated using AI.

Why does this matter? Traditional SEO leveled the playing field for small businesses, helping customers find and trust their brand. Posting keyword-rich content was a low-cost yet effective way to drive search ranking, increase web traffic, and boost online visibility.

Now, Google’s latest algorithm changes and the latest core update are specifically focused on optimizing for generative AI search, with AEO and GEO as the hot buzzwords:

  • AEO: answer engine optimization

  • GEO: generative engine optimization

Brands that depend on AI content to game the AEO/GEO system may have overplayed their hand.

Why AI content can’t cut it

According to Alli Neal, Principal and Director of Client Strategy at Split Pace Creative, “Generative AI is a shiny new tool that sounds like it will revolutionize your marketing department, but years ago, we saw exactly how it would play out. The more GenAI content that's created, the more content will be made from GenAI, and the worse it'll perform.”

This can lead to what one author deemed “Habsburg AI” – named for the infamous Habsburg dynasty and their penchant for heavy inbreeding, which resulted in disaster (aka, the photocopy problem).

The 16-month collapse

Ina fascinating experiment by Search Engine Land, AI-generated content performance was tracked over the course of 16 months.

The results were not great. AI content with no human editing, rewriting, or enhancement saw an early "honeymoon" period of indexing, but rankings typically crash within 3–6 months.

Why? It is missing the secret sauce of unique insights, useful info, and E-E-A-T:

  • Experience

  • Expertise

  • Authority

  • Trustworthiness

Helpful, reliable, people-first content beats robo-generated copy designed solely to manipulate search engine rankings, according to Google.

How to stand out and rise above by pivoting to human-led messaging

Split Pace Creative’s own case study for Connecticut Mold Pros demonstrates that consistent, long-tail keyword blog content is the key to long-term success.

This independent remediation company saw a dramatic increase in search rankings for the top three keywords in its target geography, landing it on the first page of the SERP. Over the next 6 months, by adding human-led blog and social content posting, positioning jumped to 6–8. It also rose to the top of AI search, ahead of big national brands.

That is a dramatic table-flip from the AI content collapse.

Mind the trust gap

People prefer human-written content – and so does Google search.

Trust and action are driven by different signals. The most important marketing happens before anyone even sees your brand in an AI answer. Focusing on foundational visibility is key.

"Search is always trying to give you the most credible source,” Neal says. “In a world where anyone can use generative AI to produce an answer they don't understand, the signal of authority that rises to the top is unique human expertise."

Simply put, AI over-promises and under-delivers.

We don’t. All of our content is human-written; it’s tailored to the needs of your customers, driven by expertise, and it’s demonstrably effective.

AI tools may dominate search, but the facts show human-focused content is the true winner.
